F-1 Grand Prix

F-1 グランプリ

A home conversion of Video System’s licensed arcade Formula One title, featuring real teams and drivers, Mode 7 circuit previews, and a top‑down racing style that blended arcade action with simulation elements. It marked the first entry in their long‑running licensed F1 Grand Prix series.

Description

F‑1 Grand Prix is a ported semi‑serious Formula One racing simulation. The game sought to capture the atmosphere of the early 1990s F1 seasons, featuring real teams and drivers under official license. Players could select from contemporary line‑ups such as McLaren with Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, Williams with Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese, Ferrari with Alain Prost and Jean Alesi, and many others, giving the game an authenticity rare for its time.

The Super Famicom version employed a top‑down perspective with the player’s car fixed at the centre of the screen. The track and environment rotated and scrolled around the vehicle, a technique that gave the impression of speed and direction while keeping the car sprite static. Before each race, the game used the console’s Mode 7 graphics to present a rotating, angled view of the circuit, previewing its layout and corners.

Gameplay emphasised careful handling and awareness of track limits. Cars could collide, spin, or lose time if driven aggressively, and pit stops were necessary to refuel and repair damage. The inclusion of full team rosters and recognisable circuits gave the game a simulation edge, though its presentation and mechanics remained more arcade‑like than later Formula One titles.

As the first in Video System’s F1 Grand Prix series, the Super Famicom release laid the foundation for sequels such as F‑1 Grand Prix Part II and the later SD F‑1 Grand Prix. It also marked the beginning of Video System’s long association with Formula One, which would continue into the 32‑bit era with the F1 World Grand Prix games.
