Ring-Con

Description

The Ring‑Con is a literal large ring controller for Ring Fit Adventure. Constructed from durable plastic with a high‑tension spring core, it is wrapped in foam grips and designed to hold a single Joy-Con (R) mounted into one side of the flexible ring.

It is used as a large motion controller for various fitness interactions. The accessory detects pressure when squeezed or pulled apart, while the Joy‑Con’s motion sensors and accelerometer track orientation and movement. Used in tandem with the Leg Strap, which holds the other Joy‑Con, the Ring‑Con enables a wide range of exercise inputs, from overhead presses and squats to yoga poses and running in place.

The device was central to Ring Fit Adventure’s design, where players explored a fantasy world and battled enemies by performing real‑world exercises. Attacks were mapped to specific movements, for example, pressing the Ring‑Con inward to unleash a push‑based strike, or pulling it outward to trigger ranged attacks. Outside the main adventure, the accessory also supported minigames and custom workout routines, allowing players to use it as a fitness tool independent of the role‑playing framework.

The Ring‑Con was praised for its build quality and responsiveness, offering a surprising level of resistance for a lightweight accessory. It could be squeezed or stretched for simple repetitions even without the Switch connected. Reception was favourable, being effective in making exercise engaging and accessible. The quality of what is seemingly a simple piece of hardware really made the entire game’s experience. The accessory follows Nintendo’s “exergaming” lineage of peripherals such as the Wii Balance Board. Although it was exclusive to a single title, it’s release just prior to the pandemic era made it highly in demand and a sought after experience.
