Description

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit contains a radio-controlled kart, four numbered cardboard gates, two arrow signboards, and a USB charging cable. The corresponding software is not supplied on a physical Game Card and must instead be downloaded free of charge from the Nintendo eShop. The kart contains a camera that transmits a live view of the player’s surroundings, which becomes the background of the game while computer-generated racers, items, hazards, course decorations, and other effects are superimposed over the physical environment.

Circuits are created by positioning the four numbered gates around an indoor space and then driving through them in sequence. The route taken between the gates is recorded as the course, allowing complex paths that incorporate household items. Gates can receive virtual properties such as item boxes, boosts, and hazards. The physical kart responds to events occurring in the software such as a mushroom causing a burst of speed. The game supports modes of Explore, Grand Prix, Time Trials, and Custom Race. Like mainline Mario Kart titles, completing races unlocks additional costumes and kart customisation options. The title supports local multiplayer up four people, but every participant requires a separate Switch system and physical Mario or Luigi kart.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit received generally favourable reviews, with particular praise for the accuracy of its augmented-reality effects, the responsiveness of the kart, and the novelty of making ordinary rooms into racecourses. Its release during the pandemic period was also timely for many although it did not reach the cultural heights of Animal Crossing. It was a breakthrough hit for the newly formed Velan Studios who had sought to create experimental titles and its success likely lead to their 2026 remake of Star Fox 64.
