Wii Party U

Wiiパーティ U

Original release was bundled with a Wii Remote for $69.95. Reprint ‘Nintendo Selects’ had game only for $49.95.

Description

Wii Party U is a sequel to Wii Party and it features more than eighty mini‑games designed to showcase the Wii U’s hardware, particularly the GamePad. The game divides its content into several categories: traditional board‑game style activities played on the television, “House Party” modes that encourage physical interaction with Wii Remotes, and “GamePad Party” challenges that use the controller as a tabletop device for two players.

To support tabletop play, Nintendo included a plastic stand so the GamePad could be placed flat on a table, emphasising the console’s second‑screen potential. The original release was bundled with a Wii Remote at $69.95 in Australia, while a budget reprint ‘Nintendo Selects’ had the game only for $49.95 – you tell me which was better value.

The presentation is bright and cheerful, with Mii avatars at the centre of the experience and Party Phil returning as host to guide players through the various modes. Critics praised the variety of mini‑games and the inventive use of the GamePad, though they often noted that the package lacked the depth and polish of the Mario Party series. Commercially, the game sold about 1.78 million copies by the end of 2018, which is modest compared to the Wii’s runaway successes but still makes it the best‑selling party game on the Wii U.

Retrospectively, Wii Party U was part of Nintendo’s broader strategy to broaden the Wii U’s appeal to families and casual audiences. Alongside Nintendo Land, it demonstrates the console’s distinctive features and attempts to recapture the inclusive, living‑room energy of the Wii era. Ultimately however, it was most limited by the Wii U’s overall struggles.
