Virtua Fighter 4 Passport VF.NET

バーチャファイター4 パスポート ブィエフネット

A Dreamcast GD‑ROM disc that is a companion utility for Sega’s Virtua Fighter network service. It functioned as an access tool rather than a standalone game, designed to connect players to VF.NET through the Dreamcast.

Description

Virtua Fighter 4 Passport: VF.NET was bundled with the limited edition of Shenmue II and provided an interface for Sega’s VF.NET service, which allowed players to track statistics, customise characters, and engage with Virtua Fighter community features. VF.NET was conceived as an online infrastructure for arcade and console players, linking performance data and personalisation across sessions. The Passport disc acted as one of the gateways to this service, alongside mobile phone connections through NTT DoCoMo and later J‑Phone. The service was an early experiment in persistent fighting game data and community integration.
The disc itself did not contain playable content. Rather, it offered menus and connectivity functions entirely in Japanese, requiring an active VF.NET account and compatible hardware. Its purpose was to extend Virtua Fighter 4’s arcade ecosystem into the home, reflecting Sega’s broader push to integrate Dreamcast with network services. Outside Japan the disc was inaccessible without language proficiency and VF.NET accounts. Within Japan, it was treated as a functional accessory, though its bundling with Shenmue II gave it visibility among fans. When VF.NET evolved into VF.NET EVO, Sega discontinued Dreamcast Passport support, reflecting the end of official Dreamcast backing. The Virtua Fighter 4 Passport: VF.NET is a mostly forgotten artefact of Sega’s transitional online ambitions late in the Dreamcast’s life.
