CardCaptor Sakura: Tomoyo no Video Daisakusen

カードキャプターさくら とものビデオだいさくせん

A licensed tie‑in to CLAMP’s popular manga and anime, casting players as Daidōji Tomoyo filming Sakura’s battles with the Clow Cards.

Description

CardCaptor Sakura: Tomoyo no Video Daisakusen (Tomoyo’s Video Campaign) offered a novel spin on the franchise by shifting the player’s perspective away from Sakura herself. Instead, players assume the role of Tomoyo, Sakura’s close friend and confidante, whose passion for documenting Sakura’s adventures becomes the central mechanic.

Gameplay revolves around recording Sakura’s actions as she captures Clow Cards, with performance graded on framing, timing, and how well Sakura remains in shot. This “virtual video shooting game” was unusual even within the Dreamcast’s experimental library, emphasising observation and timing over direct combat. The closest likeness to this would be Pokémon Snap (N64)or even further back Gekibo: Gekisha Boy (PC Engine). This sub-genre remains quite uncommon, more recent examples include Afrika (PS3) and Endless Ocean (Wii).

The game integrated Dreamcast peripherals such as the Visual Memory Unit (VMU) and modem, allowing players to save mini‑games, unlock a themed clock, and even exchange recordings online. Sega also released a Limited Box edition, which included themed tableware, textiles, and a Tomoyo‑branded clock, underscoring the game’s positioning as a collector’s item for fans of the series. The limited edition disc itself featured alternate artwork, further distinguishing it from the standard release.

The game was a faithful use of CLAMP’s characters and its unusual premise, which foregrounded Tomoyo’s role as documentarian rather than relegating her to a supporting character. A must for anyone who grew up with the series.
