Description

Phantasy Star II is set 1,000 years after the events of the original Phantasy Star on the Master System. The Algo Star System is now overseen by the Mother Brain, a vast computer network that has transformed the desert planet Mota into a fertile utopia. However, this peace is threatened by the sudden appearance of “biomonsters” and the malfunctioning of Mother Brain. Players control Rolf, a government agent plagued by visions of Alis Landale, the heroine of the first game, as he investigates the crisis with the help of Nei, a half‑human, half‑biomonster companion, and a growing party of allies.

The game has a complex and mature storyline, with large dungeons and can also be challenging for some. It was one of the first RPGs for a 16-bit console, released in the late 1980s domestically. Graphically it really does reflect this period as the graphics retrospectively can be mistaken for 8-bit at times, such as the lower resolution character sprites.

Gameplay shifted away from the first game’s first‑person dungeons to a top‑down perspective for exploration, with turn‑based battles presented in a third‑person view. The party can include up to four characters at once, chosen from a roster of eight, each with unique weapons, armour, and techniques. The game was also notable for being the first console RPG to use a 6‑megabit cartridge, making it the largest home console game of its time. Being such an important genre in Japan, it helped establish the proceeding golden years of 16-bit gaming.

The PAL release was significant because RPGs were still rare in the European market in 1990. The game was packaged with a thick, English‑language manual and a fold‑out map of Mota, helping players navigate its notoriously difficult dungeons. Reception in Europe was positive among early adopters, with critics praising its ambitious scope and story, though its grinding difficulty and high price point limited its mainstream reach.
