Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Joukan

クロックワーク ナイト ~ペパルーチョのだいぼうけんじょうかん

A side‑scrolling 2.5D platformer that blends pre‑rendered 3D character sprites with polygonal environments to create a visually striking launch‑era showcase for the console.

Description

Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Joukan (Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau’s Adventure) follows Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III, a wind‑up toy soldier on a quest to rescue the kidnapped Clockwork Fairy Princess Chelsea. Gameplay unfolds across four themed rooms: Betsy’s Room, Kevin’s Room, the Kitchen, and the Attic. Each level containing two platforming stages and a fully 3D boss battle. Pepper attacks with a key, which can be jabbed for quick strikes or twisted for more powerful blows, and can pick up stunned enemies or objects to throw. The game’s mechanics also include pushing and pulling blocks, collecting cogs to extend health, and gathering Imperial Crowns to spend in the “Soltia Roulette” bonus game for extra lives.

Pepperouchau’s Adventure was notable for its hybrid graphics engine: characters were digitized from high‑resolution 3D models into 2D sprites, layered over real‑time polygonal backdrops, allowing for smooth animation without overtaxing the Saturn’s hardware. Boss encounters were rendered entirely in 3D, demonstrating the console’s early polygon‑handling capabilities. The Japanese release retained a lower difficulty curve compared to later revisions of the game released in the west. Criticism focused on the short length and modest challenge despite the charming presentation.
