A baseball game developed by Sega CS1, notable for its full 3D presentation, licensed Nippon Professional Baseball rosters, and its role as the foundation of Sega’s Greatest Nine sports franchise.
Description
Kanzen Chūkei Pro Yakyū Greatest Nine is Sega’s early attempt to deliver a realistic baseball simulation on the Saturn. The title’s full name translates to “Full Broadcast Professional Baseball Greatest Nine,” reflecting its emphasis on television‑style presentation. It featured licensed teams and players from the 1994 Nippon Professional Baseball season, complete with detailed statistics and authentic uniforms. Sega used motion capture from real athletes, including future NPB pitcher Masahide Kobayashi, to give player animations a more lifelike quality.
Gameplay offered multiple modes, including Exhibition, Season, and Playoff, with strategic depth in managing pitching rotations, batting orders, and player substitutions. The game also allowed customisation of teams, uniforms, and player abilities, giving fans a sense of control over their roster. Commentary from Japanese baseball announcers and atmospheric details like weather effects reinforced the broadcast‑style immersion.
Visually, Greatest Nine was praised for its polygonal player models and detailed stadiums, which stood out against sprite‑based sports titles of the era. While not as advanced as later 3D sports games, it was considered one of the Saturn’s most impressive baseball simulations. Reviews in Japan and abroad were generally positive, with Famitsu scoring it 27/40 and Western magazines often rating it in the 80–90% range.
The game’s success led to a series of sequels on the Saturn between 1996 and 1998, including Greatest Nine ’96, Greatest Nine ’97, and Greatest Nine ’98 Summer Action. Internationally, a modified version of the original was released as World Series Baseball (1995), featuring Major League Baseball teams instead of Japanese rosters. The franchise later resurfaced in 2002 with Baseball Advance on the Game Boy Advance, developed by Smilebit. Retrospectively Kanzen Chūkei Pro Yakyū Greatest Nine was a landmark Saturn sports title, proiding authenticity, technical ambition, and role in shaping Sega’s baseball game lineage. It a great example of mid‑1990s early 3D sports design and the contemporary Japanese baseball gaming scene.
