A time-traveling platformer that blends classic running and jumping with diverse gameplay styles, delivering one of the most polished and inventive entries in the Crash Bandicoot series.

Description

Crash Bandicoot 3: Buttobi! Sekai Isshū continues the series’ lighthearted rivalry as Crash and Coco Bandicoot are summoned by Aku Aku to stop the scheming Uka Uka and the newly empowered Doctor Neo Cortex. After the discovery of a powerful artifact known as the Time-Twisting machine, Cortex and his allies scatter Time Crystals across different eras, hoping to claim dominance over history itself. Crash and Coco travel through time from ancient civilisations to futuristic settings, to recover the crystals and thwart their plans, all while facing familiar enemies and new dangers tied to each distinct period.

Building upon its predecessors, this third entry refines the series’ tight platforming while expanding gameplay variety. Traditional running and jumping stages are complemented by vehicle-based levels and alternate playstyles, including aerial dogfights, underwater exploration, and high-speed chases. The introduction of relic challenges adds replayability, encouraging players to master levels with speed and precision. Compared to the earlier games, the controls feel more polished and responsive, and the stage design is broader in scope, reflecting Naughty Dog’s final iteration of the series on the PlayStation. It stands as a culmination of ideas introduced in earlier entries, combining the corridor platforming of the original with the experimental flair of its sequel.

This Japanese version of Crash Bandicoot 3 is quite localised and has expanded content, most notably its support for the PocketStation peripheral. Players could download Crash Anywhere, a companion virtual pet-style app featuring mini-games like rhythm challenges, obstacle runs, and puzzles, along with a collectible photo system that could feed back into the main game’s completion progress.  Beyond this, the release has a unique title screen and theme song, unlockable bonus CG movies, and full Japanese voice acting with more expressive character sounds.  Gameplay and balance received subtle changes, with easier Time Trial requirements and reduced enemy counts in some stages, alongside numerous smaller tweaks to UI, hints, and visuals.

In Japan, the game was well received as part of the broader popularity of the Crash Bandicoot franchise during the PlayStation era, where the character had become a recognisable mascot figure. Critically, it earned praise for its refined mechanics, inventive level variety, and accessible yet challenging design, often being regarded as one of the strongest entries in the original trilogy. Retrospectively, Crash Bandicoot 3 is frequently highlighted as a benchmark for 3D platformers of its time, admired for successfully balancing innovation with the series’ core formula and leaving a lasting influence on subsequent platform games.
