Description
Gekitotsu TomaRunner L’Arc~en~Ciel features a series of competitive races through diverse environments where characters navigate complex obstacle courses on foot. It is a licensed re-release/special edition of Gekisou TomaRunner, adding members of the band L’Arc-en-Ciel as playable characters. It focuses on the athletic ability of contestants as they traverse urban and fantasy landscapes to reach a finish line. The game integrates L’Arc‑en‑Ciel thematically through playable characters and music by featuring the popular rock musicians in the playable character roster. Success in the racing events leads to a concert‑style reward sequence, providing a celebratory musical performance at the end of the competition. This atmosphere is defined by its bright visual style and the inclusion of high energy vocal tracks.
Players interact with a control system that requires specific button inputs for complex physical manoeuvres such as climbing, swimming, and swinging. The shoulder buttons are used to paddle through water and to grasp horizontal bars or vertical poles to maintain momentum through corners. A dash mechanic allows for temporary bursts of speed while a power gauge enables the use of unique items to hinder opponents. A gameplay includes the collection of crystals collectables scattered throughout the tracks. The simulation also features a cheering mode where the player provides vocal support to influence the performance of a runner.
The game has a distinctive control scheme and successfully integrates its licensed soundtrack. Reviewers noted that the inclusion of the band members voices added a layer of authenticity for the target audience. It was a successful a celebrity collaboration in a truly Japanese cross‑media promotion style that became increasingly common during the 32‑bit era.
