A reflective high fantasy adventure that returns the series to its whimsical and medieval roots after the industrial experimentation of Final Fantasy VII and VIII. The game features a refined and matured presentation of the pre-rendered environments and character-driven storytelling releasing toward the end of the hardware generation.
Description
Final Fantasy IX follows a charismatic thief who becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving the kidnapping of a princess and the subsequent threat of global warfare. This journey brings together a diverse group of companions including a young black mage seeking his identity and a stoic knight bound by duty. The story explores themes of existentialism, the value of life, and the importance of finding a place to belong within a world defined by magic and steam power. The visual presentation utilises a nostalgic art style that features stylised character designs and lush, hand-painted backgrounds that evoke a sense of classic folklore.
The gameplay refines the turn based combat system that returns to a four member party structure for the first time in several entries. A defining mechanic is the ability system where characters learn permanent skills and magical spells by equipping specific weapons and armour pieces. The game also introduces the Active Time Event feature which allows players to view simultaneous narrative developments occurring elsewhere in the world. Combat includes the Trance system where characters enter a heightened state of power and gain unique abilities after taking a certain amount of damage.
FF IX is often compared with its immediate predecessors Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII presenting a further refinement of the style and presentation that made it a signature of the original PlayStation. Yet thematically the title is noted for its deliberate return to the crystals and kingdoms of the earlier 8-bit and 16-bit eras. The game released to praise for its emotional depth, the polished quality of its cinematic sequences, and the return to a more traditional setting that felt like a celebratory tribute to the history of the franchise. Retrospectively it is a definitive masterpiece of the genre and a poignant farewell to its original PlayStation console home.
