The Yakyū foregoes a complex story, career modes, and extensive team-management systems found in premium sports franchises of the era. Instead, the focus is placed squarely on pure athletic competition, offering standard exhibition matches and tournament modes. Without a license from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), the game features fictionalised teams and athletes whose attributes are broadly patterned after classic regional archetypes, capturing the basic competitive dynamics of Japanese baseball culture within an uncomplicated structural framework.

Mechanically, the title relies on a classic 2.5D presentation with polygonal batters and pitchers operating against a mostly static field background. The core gameplay loop balances pitch selection and timing-based batting, offering responsive controls that mirror traditional arcade mechanics rather than high-fidelity simulation. A side effect of this simplicity was quick loading times.

Unlike many Western budget releases that were often belittled as shovelware, the Simple series did well to provide the core gameplay people wanted, particularly for casual gaming. Although The Yakyū obviously lacked the complex gameplay modes and graphical polish of full-priced sports simulation games, it provided an engaging experience that felt like the early generation of PlayStation titles. It would later be re-released, primarily adding NPB licensed team names.
