Instruction Manual
A vehicular combat game for PlayStation 2 that served as Sony’s first PAL online title, letting players battle in armed vehicles across large arenas with power‑ups and weapon upgrades.
Description
Hardware: Online Arena by London Studio was released in PAL regions as a launch showcase for the PlayStation 2’s new online capabilities. Players controlled a variety of armed vehicles such as tanks, buggies, and other combat rigs, and fought in expansive arenas designed for destruction. The gameplay emphasised fast‑paced vehicular combat, with weapons ranging from machine guns and missiles to lasers, while power‑ups scattered across the maps provided health, temporary boosts, or special attacks.
The game was notable for being the very first online PAL title on PlayStation 2, bundled with the Network Access Disc that came with the console’s network adaptor. While it offered only a basic training mode offline, its real focus was online multiplayer, where players could compete in death matches and team battles. Initially modest in popularity, its inclusion with the adaptor gave it a sudden surge in player numbers, making it one of the most active PS2 online games of 2003.
Hardware: Online Arena was never released outside Europe and Australia (although it was adapted for the Korean market). Online play began earlier in Japan, with titles like Final Fantasy XI (requiring the HDD) and Capcom vs. SNK 2 (network‑enabled in arcades and on console), while in North America, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs and Twisted Metal: Black Online were among the first widely played online titles.
