Letterbox Presentation
A Letterbox Presentation features a widescreen aspect ratio (typically 16:9) directly into a standard video signal by adding permanent black bars to the top and bottom of the frame. This was a common technique in the 5th and 6th generations to provide a cinematic feel on hardware that lacked native widescreen support. By reducing the vertical rendering area, it also served as a common optimisation to reduce performance demands on the system hardware.
