A deep and polished tactical RPG that expands on the foundations of its predecessor with improved visuals, coordinated attack mechanics, and a compelling fantasy-tech narrative.
Description
Riglord Saga 2 is a tactical role-playing game released exclusively for the Saturn, it serves as the direct sequel to the original Riglord Saga (known in PAL regions as Mystaria: The Realms of Lore). The game continues the series’ focus on grid-based tactical combat with sprinkles of cinematic storytelling, featuring a world where technology and magic coexist.
The gameplay contains a refined version of the previous entry’s turn-based tactical system. You control a party of heroes on a 3D isometric battlefield, managing positioning, elemental weaknesses, and special character abilities to defeat enemy forces. The atmosphere is more polished than its predecessor, with improved character sprites and more detailed battle environments. The narrative is presented through a mix of in-game dialogue and high-quality FMV sequences, maintaining the series’ reputation for high production values on the Saturn.
On a mechanical level, the game features a sophisticated character progression system where your units gain experience and learn new skills based on their performance in battle. A significant functional suite is the inclusion of “Combination Attacks,” which allow adjacent party members to perform powerful coordinated strikes. The game improves the transitions between the exploration and combat phases, and it supports the Saturn’s internal backup memory for saving progress across its lengthy campaign.
At the time of its release, Riglord Saga 2 was praised for its deep tactical systems and its visual improvements over the first game. Reviewers highlighted the engaging story and the variety of character classes available, though they noted that the high difficulty level requires careful planning. Although Micro Cabin is better known for Xak and Illusion City, this is the peak of their tactical RPG output on the Saturn.
