Dead Island: Riptide

Description

Dead Island: Riptide begins immediately after the survivors escape Banoi in Dead Island. Their ship crashes, leaving them stranded on Palanai, another island in the same archipelago. The infection has already taken hold, and the survivors must once again fight through hordes of zombies while uncovering the truth behind the outbreak. While the game adds features, it does not significantly improve on the first title’s flaws, such as technical issues and repetitive quest design.

The game features five playable characters: the four returning survivors (Sam B, Xian Mei, Logan Carter, and Purna) plus newcomer John Morgan, a hand‑to‑hand combat specialist. Each character has unique skill trees, encouraging different playstyles. Combat remains melee‑focused, with improvised weapons, durability systems, and crafting upgrades.

Firearms exist but are less central. New mechanics include hub defense sequences, where players fortify positions and fend off waves of zombies, and boat travel, which allows navigation through Palanai’s flooded swamps. Enemy variety expands with new zombie types such as Drowners, who lurk in water, and Screamers, who disorient players with piercing cries.

Cooperative play for up to four players remains a core feature, with drop‑in/drop‑out functionality. The setting of Palanai offers jungles, swamps, and the ruined city of Henderson, providing more environmental variety than the first game. Side quests, loot hunting, and skill progression systems encourage replay and exploration.

Overall a nice continuation if you were a fan of the original Dead Island.
