A spy‑themed light gun shooter that channels the style of 1960s and 70s espionage cinema, combining arcade action with tongue‑in‑cheek gadgetry and secret agent flair.

Description

Confidential Mission was developed for Sega’s NAOMI arcade hardware before being ported to the Dreamcast. The game casts you agents Howard Gibson and Jean Clifford of the Confidential Mission Force, tasked with recovering a hijacked satellite from the terrorist group Agares. Missions unfold across set‑piece locations such as a museum, a speeding train, and an underwater base, with players using light guns or controllers to shoot enemies, rescue hostages, and complete quick‑time gadget sequences. Its structure closely mirrors that of Sega’s Virtua Cop series, though with a spy‑thriller narrative more reminiscent of James Bond or Mission: Impossible.

The presentation leaned heavily into espionage tropes, from tuxedoed protagonists to high‑tech gadgets, and its pacing was designed to evoke the feel of a cinematic action sequence. Compared to contemporaries like The House of the Dead, which emphasised horror and grotesque enemies, Confidential Mission offered a sleeker, more stylish alternative, though it never achieved the same popularity. The Dreamcast port included support for the official light gun and offered multiplayer, ensuring it retained its arcade feel at home.

As a person who enjoyed the majority of Sega’s light gun franchises, particularly for multiplayer, this was polished and straightforward fun, which really perfected the formula. Yet in retrospect, it is also one of the last notable light gun shooters of its era. A mood of reflection over the changing direction of gaming.
