A violent top‑down shooter ported from the PlayStation containing a comic‑book aesthetic, grotesque anti‑heroes, and chaotic two‑player co‑op, serving as one of the console’s most notorious mature‑rated titles.
Description
Loaded blends relentless shooting and dark humour. The game casts players as one of six deranged criminals, each with unique weapons and abilities. Their mission is to escape imprisonment and ultimately confront the sadistic warden F.U.B. (“Fat Ugly Boy”), whose experiments with matter manipulation threaten galactic stability. The title supports both two‑player cooperative play, amplifying the chaos.
Gameplay unfolds from a top‑down perspective across fifteen stages, with players mowing down hordes of enemies, collecting keys, and navigating maze‑like environments. The Saturn port preserved the PlayStation’s pre‑rendered sprites and polygonal backdrops, emphasising gore and lighting effects. Blood splatters, explosions, and grotesque enemy designs reinforced the game’s reputation for excess. Each level concludes with a performance ranking based on brutality and efficiency, underscoring the game’s tongue‑in‑cheek embrace of violence.
This port of the originally PlayStation game is slightly inferior in presentation but no loss in content. The Saturn’s differences and complexities, likely resulted in not fully using the hardware. More generally, the game has its faults, it can be quite repetitive with limited variety between levels. That said its co-op mode, the atmosphere it presents, and the soundtrack by Patrick Phelan, provide a good experience. Loaded is really a product of the mid‑1990s fascination with edgy, adult‑oriented content, in the face of classification and censorship.
