Seventh Cross

セヴンスクロス

A role-playing game built around evolutionary systems and environmental survival, designed to centre player progression on transformation rather than fixed character roles.

Description

Seventh Cross places the player in control of a primitive organism on an alien world, beginning as a simple life form that must survive by consuming other creatures while avoiding predators. Progression is not driven by a traditional narrative but by movement through discrete environments, each introducing stronger species and ecological pressures. The structure focuses on survival across distinct stages rather than a developing storyline, with only minimal context provided about the wider setting. It follows in the path of E.V.O.: Search for Eden with its focus on evolution as a central mechanic.

Gameplay centres on gaining Evolution Points by defeating enemies, which are then used within an abstract system to generate new body parts. This system requires the player to create patterns on a grid tied to attributes such as offence, defence, intelligence, and healing, producing results through rules that are not clearly explained. The creature is then customised by equipping new heads, limbs, and body structures, each altering movement, attack strength, and survivability. Progression unfolds across six stages, each ending in a boss encounter, with success dependent on adapting the creature’s form to increasingly difficult conditions.

Visual design presents organic and often abstract environments rendered in early 3D, populated by unusual life forms. Creature models change visibly as new parts are attached, often producing asymmetrical and unpredictable combinations. The tone is isolated and uncertain, reinforced by sparse interface guidance and systems that require experimentation rather than instruction.

At release the game received generally negative reviews. Critics noted the originality of its evolution system but criticised its unclear mechanics, repetitive progression, and lack of direction. These types of games inherently lack direction, making the game design a challenge. Unlike more successful ones in the niche genre like Dōbutsu Banchō, Seventh Cross is most remembered as an unusual and difficult experiment.
