A fast-paced puzzle platformer that transforms its stages between two opposing dream worlds at the press of a button. Developed from the lineage of a Nintendo DS remake of the Commodore 64 original, the Director’s Cut brings the expanded home-console edition to Wii U in a physical release with limited distribution.
Description
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams Director’s Cut follows the adolescent Giana into a corrupted dream world after the dragon Gurglewocky abducts her sister, Maria. Giana’s changing personality gives her control over the dream itself, shifting every landscape between a bright but dangerous fantasy and a darker world that responds to her more rebellious form. Her search for Maria becomes an expression of inner conflict, with fear, confidence, and transformation reflected directly in the scenery around her.
Giana switches instantly between Cute and Punk forms, with each personality changing her abilities, the environment, enemies, hazards, and available routes. Cute Giana uses a twirling jump to glide across gaps, while Punk Giana performs a forceful dash that breaks obstacles and attacks enemies. Players combine both techniques through 33 stages filled with crystals, concealed passages, timed hazards, environmental puzzles, and large boss encounters. The Director’s Cut incorporates the seven-stage Rise of the Owlverlord expansion, its additional boss, Halloween and Christmas levels, Easy, Hardcore, and Über Hardcore settings, and a crossfading soundtrack that shifts between Chris Hülsbeck’s melodic arrangements and Machinae Supremacy’s heavier interpretation as the world changes.
The game is a remake of The Great Giana Sisters, a Commodore 64 platformer whose similarities to Super Mario Bros. made it one of the most discussed European games of its era. Initially released as Giana Sisters DS, a Nintendo DS remake and revival, it was later crowdfunded for a home port as Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. That project began on PC and was subsequently ported to all consoles. The Director’s Cut consolidates the original campaign and expansion material. The release was predominantly digital-only, only the PS4 received a physical release along with this independently published, US-only Wii U release. Contemporary reception praised its fluid transformations, demanding platforming, sharply contrasted artwork, and dual soundtrack, while criticism focused on uneven difficulty, extended stages, and occasional repetition.
