McDonald’s Global Gladiators

A McDonald’s-licensed action platformer that sees the characters from the game M.C. Kids explore an environmental adventure, featuring fluid animation, fast movement, and projectile-based combat.

Description

McDonald’s Global Gladiators follows Mick and Mack, two children transported by Ronald McDonald into the world of their favourite comic book. Armed with goo-firing weapons, they travel through four pollution-themed worlds to protect the environment, eventually returning to McDonald’s after completing their mission. It was created under an agreement requiring Virgin to produce a McDonald’s-themed game within six months. Although it retains Mick and Mack from M.C. Kids, the heroes were substantially redesigned and the familiar McDonaldland setting was replaced with forests, toxic environments, industrial machinery, and other locations built around pollution.

The gameplay sees player to select either Mick or Mack before entering stages built around running, jumping, shooting enemies, locating hidden areas, and collecting McDonald’s arches. Both characters are functionally identical, while their goo weapons can be aimed horizontally or at slight upward and downward angles, with each shot producing recoil capable of moving the character backwards. Progress requires collecting enough arches before reaching the goal, while hazards include contaminated water, pits, hostile creatures, and machinery.

Compared with M.C. Kids, it abandons the exploratory McDonaldland structure for faster, more linear platforming and introduces projectile combat, but also removes its two-player option. The contractually limited development period did not prevent the game from becoming an important early production for Virgin Games’ American studio. Its technical presentation impressed Walt Disney leading to Virgin’s Disney’s Aladdin and The Jungle Book. Retrospectively it has energetic audiovisual presentation with large sprites, expressive animation, and colourful backgrounds, however it suffers from slippery movement, difficult momentum, and repetitive objectives, not helped by a short campaign. Its developed moving away from its McDonald’s branding saw it become a solid title, displaying the animation and platform-game technology that Virgin’s team would refine in its later licensed games.
