A quirky side‑scrolling platformer that reimagines a Japanese original with a tongue‑in‑cheek horror theme, casting players as the headless mummy Chuck D. Head on a bizarre, pun‑filled quest to reassemble a shattered skeleton island.
Description
Decap Attack is a heavily reworked, Westernised version of the Japanese title Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daibōken 「まじかるハットのぶっとびターボ!大冒険」, which itself drew on the mechanics of earlier Vic Tokai games such as Kid Kool and Psycho Fox. For the Western release, the art, music, characters, and story were completely replaced with a tongue‑in‑cheek horror theme. Players control Chuck D. Head, a headless mummy created by the eccentric Dr. Frank N. Stein, who must defeat the demon Max D. Cap and his underworld army after they shatter a skeleton‑shaped island into pieces.
Gameplay revolves around navigating themed stages named after body parts, such as Abdomainland, Armington, and Eyeland, each culminating in a boss fight. Chuck attacks enemies by thrusting the grotesque face embedded in his torso, and he can also acquire a skull power‑up that sits on his shoulders and can be thrown like a boomerang. Potions provide temporary powers such as invincibility or screen‑clearing attacks, while careful platforming and repeated stomps are required to dispatch tougher foes. The game’s mechanics, including flutter‑jumping to slow descent, gave it a distinctive feel compared to other platformers of the era.
The tone is deliberately absurd and macabre, blending slapstick humour with horror imagery. Its parody of monster tropes and pun‑laden level names gave it a cult identity, especially in Europe where it was supported by a long‑running Decap Attack comic strip in Sonic the Comic. Reception at release was mixed: critics praised its quirky style and inventive mechanics but noted its uneven difficulty and derivative roots. Over time, however, it has become a fondly remembered oddity in the Mega Drive library, often cited as one of Sega’s more eccentric localisations.
