Description

New Super Luigi U is a standalone 2D platforming adventure released as part of “The Year of Luigi.” Initially offered as downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U, it was subsequently issued as a limited retail release and later bundled with the original game. Although it reuses the same interconnected world map and visual foundation, its redesigned courses, accelerated pacing, and complete removal of Mario give the adventure a distinct identity centred on Luigi.

The campaign follows Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and the newly playable Nabbit as they travel through themed regions such as Acorn Plains and Meringue Clouds to reclaim Peach’s Castle from Bowser. Its 82 courses are considerably shorter than those in New Super Mario Bros. U, but each imposes a strict 100-second time limit and introduces denser arrangements of enemies, hazards, secrets, and precision-platforming challenges. Nabbit cannot use conventional power-ups but is immune to enemy damage, providing a more accessible option for inexperienced players.

The gameplay places a greater emphasis on momentum, rapid decision-making, and mastery of Luigi’s distinctive movement. His higher jump allows him to reach elevated platforms more easily, while his reduced ground friction makes stopping and landing accurately more difficult. Power-ups such as the Super Acorn grant the Flying Squirrel form, enabling controlled gliding, wall clinging, and vertical bursts. Multiplayer supports up to four playable characters, while Boost Mode allows another participant to use the Wii U GamePad to place temporary platforms or disrupt enemies in real time.

The game was praised for offering far more than a conventional expansion, and remains one of Luigi’s most substantial starring roles. Some players may find Luigi’s slippery handling and the abbreviated courses initially frustrating, but these qualities provide a focused technical challenge rarely found elsewhere in the modern 2D Mario series. The title was later included alongside the original campaign in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Nintendo Switch.
