DragonHeart: Fire & Steel

A medieval side-scrolling action game loosely based on the 1996 fantasy film Dragonheart that expands Sir Bowen’s conflict with the tyrannical King Einon into a broader quest. It is substantially different to the Game Boy adaptation.

Description

DragonHeart: Fire & Steel expands upon the movie plot into a wider adventure involving hostile soldiers, mythical creatures, and seven evil dragons created specifically for the game. Players control Bowen through linear stages combining platforming, exploration, and close-range sword combat. His available actions include standing and crouching attacks, blocking with a shield, stronger directional techniques, and ranged attacks using several types of arrows. Physical exertion drains an endurance meter, leaving Bowen temporarily defenceless when exhausted, while sword and shield upgrades improve his capabilities. Gold collected from defeated enemies can be exchanged for supplies, and hidden areas contain additional equipment or characters who provide assistance. Draco can be summoned with limited Dragon Call items to attack enemies, while occasional three-dimensional flight sequences briefly place the dragon under direct control.

The presentation combines rendered medieval backgrounds with digitised characters and excerpts derived from the film, giving the game a distinctive live-action appearance comparable to other mid-1990s productions built around captured performers. This however, cannot make up for the poor gameplay. The animation is stiff, movement is slow, and combat frequently becomes awkward because attacks consume endurance while enemies can block or surround Bowen. The attractive scenery, secrets, upgrade system, and occasional assistance from Draco suggest a more ambitious adventure beneath the surface, but repetitive encounters and cumbersome controls prevent those ideas from developing into a consistently enjoyable experience. Contemporary reviews were overwhelmingly negative, commonly criticising its simplistic design, jerky animation, and poor responsiveness despite acknowledging the quality of some backgrounds.
