Description

Rolling Thunder 2 follows agents Leila and Albatross as they confront Geldra, a terrorist organisation that has destroyed communication satellites and disrupted the global flow of information. Intelligence links Geldra’s return to the arms merchant Gimdo, whom the agents pursue through Florida, Egypt, caves, laboratories, and fortified installations. The Genesis conversion expands the arcade game’s story sequences and adds new locations, giving the mission greater variety while retaining the series’ espionage setting and futuristic enemy designs. It is a direct sequel to the original Rolling Thunder, but moves from the original’s late-1960s spy-thriller to a contemporary, near-future setting.

The game plays as a side-scrolling action platformer in which players move between upper and lower walkways, crouch beneath attacks, enter doors for cover, and carefully manage limited ammunition. Leila and Albatross cannot fire while moving or jumping, so progress depends on positioning, timing, and learning where enemies appear. The Genesis version contains 11 missions, additional enemies and bosses, hidden time and health bonuses, a password system, and new Flame Gun and Shot Cluster weapons. Two players control Leila and Albatross simultaneously; if one agent is incapacitated, the surviving player continues until reaching a continue point that restores the fallen agent to play.

Its measured platforming and layered stages invite comparison with Shinobi, although Rolling Thunder 2 places greater emphasis on taking cover, conserving ammunition, and memorising enemy attacks. Retrospective reviews have praised its deliberate rhythm, varied level design, cooperative play, and substantial console additions, while also acknowledging that the restricted movement and severe later missions may frustrate players expecting faster action.
