Space Hawks

A fixed-screen space shooter that combines formations of descending aliens with indestructible mines, changing attack patterns, and increasingly fast waves.

Description

Space Hawks sees you move a spacecraft horizontally across the bottom of a scrolling starfield and firing at groups of alien creatures threatening the galaxy. Eight enemy types appear across seven stages, diving individually or in groups while dropping projectiles and fragments towards the player. Later waves introduce faster and less predictable movement, while indestructible space mines create additional obstacles that must be avoided rather than shot.

The game takes clear inspiration from Space Invaders, Galaxian, and Phoenix, but its enemies break formation and attack with varied diving patterns rather than simply advancing together. The smooth starfield, colourful animation, responsive movement, and busy enemy waves were respectable for an early CPC release, although occasional flicker and imperfect collision detection are noticeable. A short rendition of the Star Wars theme accompanies the title screen, with basic effects used during play.

Space Hawks was a competent introductory shooter and accompanied some early CPC packages, but its limited stages and repetitive action provide little lasting depth. The shifting attack patterns make it more interesting than a direct Space Invaders imitation, yet it was generally regarded as an adequate diversion rather than one of the system’s stronger arcade games. It works well for a brief score-focused session, but becomes predictable once its small selection of enemies and hazards has been encountered.
