Admiral Graf Spee

説明

Admiral Graf Spee is set during the early stages of the Second World War, putting you in command of the German commerce raider with orders to locate and sink Allied shipping. Enemy vessels appear as flashing points on a map, requiring the player to adjust course and speed until close enough to identify and engage them. Cargo ships are relatively easy targets, while cruisers and battleships can inflict serious damage or destroy the Graf Spee. The instrument display records heading, speed, fuel, ammunition, torpedoes, target distance, damage, and bearing. Once within range, you can fire the ship’s six guns or launch torpedoes, while enemy vessels may return fire or attempt to escape. Supplies are limited, making periodic meetings with the support ship Altmark necessary for fuel, ammunition, and repairs. Resupplying also relocates enemy ships and leaves the Graf Spee vulnerable to interception. Seven difficulty settings range from easy to extremely demanding.

The game’s historical premise and finite resources create some tension, particularly when deciding whether an unidentified contact is worth pursuing. However, the presentation consists mostly of sparse maps, statistics, tiny ship drawings, and basic combat messages. Long periods are spent making gradual course adjustments and waiting to reach targets, with little tactical control once battle begins. Contemporary and retrospective reception was poor, criticising the shallow gameplay, minimal graphics and sound, and low replay value. Any patient naval-strategy enthusiasts may appreciate its restrained simulation of commerce raiding, but most players will find it repetitive and uneventful compared to the many other naval battle titles of the era.
