A serial link cable to connect to WonderSwan consoles through its single communications port.
Description
The official WonderSwan Communication Cable is a direct serial link accessory designed solely to connect two WonderSwan-family handhelds for multiplayer gaming or data exchange in supported titles. Plugging into each system’s expansion port, it enables head‑to‑head or cooperative multiplayer modes and data exchange between two systems. The cable shares the same port used by other peripherals like the MobileWonderGate mobile phone link or WonderWitch PC link. Since each item lacks its own dedicated connector, only one can be utilised at one time. This is mainly an issue if wanting to use headphones, as the WonderSwan lacked a dedicated headphone jack. The headphone adapter, again unfortunately uses the same communication port.
Commercially the cable saw a modest uptake: as it was supported by a limited albeit notable set of multiplayer titles, including puzzle and fighting games, and was occasionally bundled or promoted alongside software. Bandai ensured that several high‑profile franchises supported link play. One Piece Grand Battle Swan Colosseum (2002) is often cited as the standout, bringing the popular manga’s characters into a Smash Bros‑style brawler that allowed two handhelds to connect for head‑to‑head matches. SD Gundam Operation U.C. (2002) is another well‑remembered title, offering side‑scrolling mecha combat with a versus mode that could be played PvP via this cable. Mr. Driller (1999), a Namco puzzle action game, was one of the earliest WonderSwan releases to support competitive play, letting two players race to drill through blocks while managing air supplies.
Retrospectively, the Communication Cable was necessary to compete against the dominant handheld ecosystem in Japan, by offering familiar and expected features provided by Nintendo’s Game Boy link cable. Today the cable remains an essential accessory for those who want to experience the system’s multiplayer capabilities as originally intended.
