Anthem
A 2019 online multiplayer action RPG from BioWare and EA, where players pilot customisable Javelin exosuits to explore a hostile alien world, battle deadly foes, and harness the mysterious “Anthem of Creation.”
Description
Anthem blends third‑person shooter combat with RPG progression in a shared open world. Set on the unfinished planet of Coda, humanity survives in fortified cities like Fort Tarsis, while elite pilots, known as Freelancers, venture beyond the walls in powerful, fully customisable Javelin exosuits. Four Javelin types: Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, and Storm, each offer distinct abilities and play styles, from heavy shielded tanking to agile melee strikes or long‑range elemental attacks.
The story follows your Freelancer’s fight to stop the Dominion’s leader, the Monitor, from seizing the Anthem of Creation, a godlike force left behind by the vanished Shapers. Players can team up in squads of up to four to tackle missions, free‑roam exploration, and large‑scale world events like cataclysms.
Anthem’s trajectory was rough from the start, and it never recovered. Despite praise for its flight mechanics, visuals, and combat feel, Anthem faced criticism for repetitive missions, shallow loot systems, and technical issues. Player drop‑off happened fast, and while BioWare announced a full redesign (“Anthem Next”) in 2020, that overhaul was cancelled in February 2021. The servers were subsequently maintained, but EA confirmed servers would shut down in January 2026, rendering the game unplayable.
