A third party power accessory for Game Boy Pocket providing an interchangeable rechargeable battery that can be charged directly through the console’s AC adaptor.
Description
The Blaze Pocket Game Boy Battery Pack is a third party rechargeable battery pack that fits into the Game Boy Pocket battery compartment. It provides an alternate to using disposable batteries, with a rechargeable unit that provides similar performance to AA rechargeable batteries of the era. The device contained a battery adaptor, which connected to the AA battery contacts on the console, and the battery itself, which could quick release when attached to the adaptor and also act as the compartment cover. It also comes bundled with an AC adapter that is suitable to power the console.
The main advantage of this battery pack over regular AA rechargeable batteries is this contains additional circuitry and a DC barrel power port, meaning it can recharge itself without the need for an external charger. It charges using the same power type (6V DC) as the Game Boy Pocket itself, making the AC adapter also interchangeable. The main downside was the battery physically protruded from the console, however given the technology of the time, this was a trade off. The extra weight being at the base of the console did not particularly affect its ergonomics. The whole setup was quite convenient compared to the official option which was an external rechargeable battery, which required tethering the console.
Today these items remind us of the limited battery life we used to experience and how much things have improved. For anyone using a Game Boy today, there are a number of modern options available that use a lithium‑ion battery with substantially more power density, along with USB-C charging.
