Tsuricon 64
つりコン64Fishing controller for the Nintendo 64. Supported by several titles.
Description
The Tsuricon 64 is shaped like a fishing rod handle, with a working reel that acts as an analogue input. The grip includes buttons mapped to the N64 controller’s functions, allowing players to navigate menus and perform in‑game actions without switching devices.
Casting is simulated by flicking the rod, while reeling in is done with the physical reel. Sensitivity varies depending on the lure, line tension, and fish behaviour, giving a tactile sense of fishing. The reel’s resistance was engineered to provide feedback, making the act of catching fish more immersive than with a standard controller.
The accessory reflects Nintendo’s and Itoi’s willingness to experiment with “everyday life” simulations. Much like the Animal Crossing series (which Itoi also influenced), the Tsuricon 64 embodies a philosophy of play that emphasises patience, atmosphere, and immersion over competition.
Unlike Sega’s Dreamcast Fishing Controller (can’t believe I sold mine) which worked with multiple fishing titles (including Soul Calibur…), the Tsuricon 64 was only compatible with Itoi’s Bass Fishing Definitive Edition. This exclusivity to a Japan-only title, combined with its late release in the N64’s life cycle, limited its production and adoption. The Tsuricon 64 is now somewhat sought‑after collector’s item. Complete boxed sets (controller + game bundle) are especially rare. I’ll be honest, I got mine out of curiosity and it was a cheap clearance but never used it.
