Description

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was the sole game developed by The Game Designers Studio, a subsidiary of Square created specifically to work with Nintendo hardware at a time when Square’s mainline titles were still absent from Nintendo consoles. In Japan, the game was published by Nintendo, marking a rare collaboration between the two companies after years of separation following the cancellation of Final Fantasy VII on the Nintendo 64.

Set in a world covered by a poisonous Miasma, the story follows a travelling caravan whose mission is to collect drops of myrrh, a magical substance that powers the great crystals protecting settlements from the deadly fog. Players create a character from one of four distinct tribes, Clavat, Lilty, Yuke, or Selkie, each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and cultural identity. The family profession system ties the player’s background to in‑game benefits, influencing the items and upgrades available during the journey.

The gameplay blends real‑time combat with exploration, puzzle solving, and cooperative play. While it can be completed solo, the title was designed with multiplayer in mind, requiring each participant to connect a Game Boy Advance to the GameCube via a link cable. This allowed every player to have a private screen displaying maps, inventory, and secret information, encouraging communication and teamwork. The Japanese version leaned heavily on this feature, making it one of the most distinctive multiplayer experiences on the system.
