A third‑person aerial combat game for the Nintendo GameCube, released exclusively in Japan on 8 August 2003, developed by Treasure and published by Bandai, although they would rather forget.
Description
Dragon Drive: D‑Masters Shot adapted the Dragon Drive manga and anime into a fast‑paced action title that combined free‑flight arena battles with occasional rail‑shooter sequences. Players controlled dragons across large outdoor stages, using lock‑on targeting, dashing, and chaining attacks to defeat waves of enemies. The combat system emphasised speed and manoeuvrability, drawing frequent comparisons to Konami’s Zone of the Enders, while the scripted rail segments echoed Sega’s Panzer Dragoon.
The game featured both single‑player and multiplayer modes, with competitive battles allowing players to pit their dragons against one another. Boss encounters demanded precision dodging and mastery of the lock‑on system, reinforcing Treasure’s reputation for tightly designed, high‑intensity action mechanics. Presentation adopted a cel‑shaded style consistent with the anime source material, giving the dragons and environments a stylised look. The soundtrack, composed by Toshiya Yamanaka, supported the high‑energy pace of the battles.
This game was quite poorly received. The combat was repetitive and underdeveloped, with limited enemy variety and little depth beyond basic lock‑on and dash mechanics. The rail‑shooter stages were too few to add variety, and the overall pacing was considered uneven. While the concept had promise, the execution fell short of Treasure’s usual standards. As a result, Dragon Drive: D‑Masters Shot is remembered less as a hidden gem and more a best hidden treasure. Its blend of free‑flight combat and rail sequences was unusual for early 2000s GameCube exclusives, but its poor reception and lack of localisation has left it rather obscure.
