Description
Super Mario Sunshine ended a long-waited return for Nintendo’s mascot. Before Nintendo seemingly put out an unlimited supply of new Mario games there was a long wait after Super Mario 64. Sunshine came out six months into the GameCube’s life. In case Luigi Mansion wasn’t proof enough, it really cemented how far things had progressed on from the N64 era.
In Sunshine, Mario is visiting the tropical Isle Delfino and ends up in a quest to clean up pollution and restore his reputation. The game centres around FLUDD, a water-powered jetpack that introduces new movement mechanic such as spraying, hovering, and launching. These reframe classic Mario platforming with environmental puzzles and fluid navigation. Stages are open-ended and tied to specific locales, each with its own quirks, challenges, and mini-narratives.
Compared to Super Mario 64, Sunshine leans more heavily into story, cutscenes, and themed level design, while retaining precise control and dynamic camera shifts. Its mix of exploration, clean-up objectives, and acrobatic movement offers a distinctive, if occasionally divisive, evolution in the series.
