Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II
A high speed flight action game where players complete mission objectives like search and destroy or protection across ten levels. Players can control various starfighters, including the X-wing and Millennium Falcon, and utilise a tactics menu to command wingmen during missions. A GameCube launch title was extremely well received.
Description
Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II is widely considered one of the greatest Star Wars games ever made. Releasing alongside the Nintendo GameCube launch, this arcade-style flight combat game took the solid foundation of the Nintendo 64 original and turned it into an absolute visual powerhouse that still holds up remarkably well today.
Instead of an expanded universe storyline, Rogue Leader drops you straight into the cockpit for the most iconic space and atmospheric battles from the original movie trilogy. Playing primarily as Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles, you lead the Rebel Alliance through the Death Star trench run, the snowy plains of Hoth, the Battle of Endor, and a handful of original side missions. Just like the original, it features a demanding and highly replayable medal system. Earning bronze, silver, and gold medals unlocks an impressive roster of secret ships, including the Millennium Falcon, Slave I, the Naboo Starfighter, and even Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced, plus secret bonus missions where you get to play as the Empire.
At a technical level, the lighting effects, detailed bump-mapping on the ships, and the sheer number of TIE fighters on screen with zero slowdown completely blew away anything available on consoles at the time. It maintains the fast, accessible flight physics of the first game but introduces the ability to command your wingmen. Using the D-pad, you can quickly order your squad to form up, attack TIE fighters, or target ground installations like AT-ATs. As a GameCube launch title, this game really flexed exactly what the new hardware could do.
Upon release, it was a critical and commercial success and became the absolute must-have launch game for the system in the West. It completely nailed the cinematic feel, sound design, and speed of the movies, cementing its legacy as a masterpiece of the era. In retrospect, a quite spectacular third party launch title.
