Secret of Evermore

An action RPG where a boy and his shape-shifting dog explore four time-themed worlds, battling enemies and using alchemy to find a way back home.

Description

Secret of Evermore (1995) holds a unique place in RPG history as the only game developed by Square’s short-lived North American studio. It was often mistaken as part of the Mana series due to its similar real-time combat, ring menu system, and cooperative feel. In reality, it was a standalone project with its own quirky identity. The story follows a boy and his dog, accidentally transported into the world of Evermore, a patchwork of realms inspired by different eras: prehistoric jungles, ancient civilisations, medieval castles, and a futuristic space station. The dog’s ability to change form in each realm, combined with the boy’s use of alchemy (a spell system based on mixing ingredients), gave the game a distinct mechanical flavor.

The tone of Secret of Evermore is more atmospheric and subdued than many of its contemporaries. Jeremy Soule, in his first major game soundtrack, crafted an ambient score that leaned into mood and texture rather than sweeping melodies, which set it apart from the more bombastic scores of Final Fantasy or Secret of Mana. At launch, the game received generally positive reviews for its graphics and gameplay, but it was also criticised for not living up to the expectations set by Square’s Japanese RPGs. Some fans were disappointed it wasn’t a true Mana sequel, while others came to appreciate its experimental systems and offbeat humor. Over time, it developed a cult following, remembered as a curious sibling to Square’s more famous titles with familiar mechanics, quite but distinct in tone and design.

I purchased an imported copy from a local store, as was quite common during the era in Australia, months prior to the local release in early 1996. Played it extensively over the southern summer break.
