A side-scrolling platformer based on the short-lived animated TV series of the same name.
Description
Family Dog is based on the cartoon Family Dog, which itself spun out of an episode of the anthology series Amazing Stories. In both the show and the game, the dog is the put‑upon protagonist, enduring the chaos of suburban life with a mischievous young boy and an indifferent family. You play in the role of the dog, navigating a series of side‑scrolling stages that loosely follow the show’s narrative beats.
The first section has the dog surviving the antics of Billy, the family’s son, who throws objects and sets traps around the house. Later levels shift to the dog training at obedience school, where hazards include dodging balls, avoiding trainers, and performing tricks under pressure. The final act takes place in the city pound, where the dog must escape confinement and hostile animals.
Family Dog is a straightforward platformer. The dog can jump, bark to stun enemies, and perform basic tricks, but the move set is limited. The design reflects the era’s typical licensed game approach: short, linear levels, modest sprite work, and a focus on brand recognition rather than mechanical innovation. The game mirrors the show’s satirical tone, portraying the dog as loyal and good‑natured while the humans around him are careless or cruel. This inversion, where the pet is sympathetic and the family is antagonistic, was unusual for the time and gave the property a slightly darker edge compared to other cartoon tie‑ins.
While the game’s presentation captures the show’s quirky tone, the mechanics are fairly limited and the game is ridiculously short – like a mere 30 minutes. At best it is a curiosity for fans of the long forgotten series.
