Description
Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is a side-scrolling action game based on the second film in the original Star Wars trilogy. Released for the Super Famicom and SNES in 1993, it continues the fast-paced platforming and shooting gameplay from the previous instalment, with players navigating iconic scenes from the movie, such as the icy terrain of Hoth and the swamps of Dagobah.
Players primarily control Luke Skywalker, now equipped with a lightsaber and early Force powers, though additional characters are playable in select stages. The game mixes ground combat with vehicle sequences like snowspeeder dogfights and escape runs in X-wings, adding variety across levels. Visually, it features detailed sprite animations and dynamic backgrounds, supported by a digitised soundtrack that mirrors the film’s score.
Noted for its difficulty, tight controls, and movie-faithful pacing, the game was well received at the time and remains one of the more ambitious Star Wars adaptations from the 16-bit era.
