Ecco the Dolphin

エコー ザ ドルフィン

An underwater adventure for the Mega Drive, combining fluid swimming controls, puzzle‑like exploration, and a mysterious time‑travel storyline with atmospheric visuals and sound.

Description

Ecco the Dolphin at first glance looks like a serene undersea exploration title, but it quickly reveals itself as a challenging, often mysterious quest. You play as Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin whose entire pod is suddenly swept away by a mysterious waterspout. To find them, Ecco must journey across Earth’s oceans, travel back in time, and eventually confront an alien threat.

Gameplay blends fluid swimming controls with puzzle‑like level design. Ecco can dash to ram enemies, leap from the water, and use echolocation both to communicate with other sea creatures and to map the surrounding area. Air management is a constant concern – Ecco must surface or find air pockets to breathe. The game’s difficulty is notorious, with hazards ranging from predators to environmental traps, and progression often requiring careful observation and experimentation.

Its moody, ambient soundtrack and unusual, almost philosophical narrative set it apart from other platformers of the era. The game’s success led to multiple ports, a Mega CD version with enhanced audio and extra levels, a reimagining on 8-bit hardware and a direct sequel, Ecco: The Tides of Time, in subsequent years.

This is a Japanese/Asian Mega Drive style cartridge but probably an unlicensed copy given the lack of Mega Drive or Sega branding.
