Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

ちょうたんていけん簿 レインコード

A surreal mystery adventure from the creators of Danganronpa, where an amnesiac detective and a mischievous death god unravel conspiracies in a rain-soaked city through puzzle-filled dungeons called Mystery Labyrinths.

Description

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code follows Yuma Kokohead, a detective-in-training who has lost his memory, and his constant companion Shinigami, a cheeky death god bound to him. Together they investigate crimes in Kanai Ward, a corporate-controlled city where it never stops raining. Each case culminates in the Mystery Labyrinth, a dreamlike dimension where the truth of the crime manifests as shifting corridors, contradictions, and monstrous phantoms. The tone is a mix of noir and dark fantasy, with heavy conspiracies and shocking twists balanced by absurd humor and eccentric character interactions. Like Danganronpa, it thrives on unpredictable turns, but instead of a death game, each chapter introduces new characters and mysteries, giving the story a broader, episodic feel.

The gameplay alternates between exploring Kanai Ward and solving cases inside the Mystery Labyrinth. In the city, players gather clues, complete side quests, and interact with allies to earn skills and upgrades. Once enough evidence is collected, the Labyrinth opens, transforming the investigation into a stylized dungeon filled with logic puzzles, quick-time events, and “Reasoning Death Matches” where players literally slash through lies with the correct evidence. This blend of visual novel storytelling, exploration, and action-oriented puzzle solving makes it feel like a hybrid of Ace Attorney and Danganronpa, but with a more cinematic 3D presentation.

The game was directed by Kazutaka Kodaka and developed by Too Kyo Games with Spike Chunsoft. It spent about six years in development, with one of the biggest challenges being the transition from Rui Komatsuzaki’s distinctive 2D art style into fully 3D models while retaining their unique flair. The team wanted to move away from Danganronpa’s closed-circle “death game” format and instead build a structure where each chapter introduces new characters and cases. The Mystery Labyrinth system was designed from scratch to feel like an interactive puzzle dungeon rather than a courtroom trial, and optimising the game for the Nintendo Switch proved to be one of the toughest technical hurdles.

Reception was mixed to positive. Critics praised the stylish presentation, creative worldbuilding, and Kodaka’s signature twists, with the finale often highlighted as a strong payoff. However, some felt the pacing dragged in the middle chapters, side quests were tedious, and performance on Switch suffered from long load times and frame drops. Shinigami’s constant presence divided opinion—some enjoyed her comic relief, while others found her repetitive. Despite these criticisms, Rain Code was generally seen as a worthy successor to Danganronpa, offering a fresh spin on mystery storytelling with a more expansive, cinematic scope. The game was released onto other platforms over a year later with a few additional features.
