Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

龍の国 ルーンファクトリー Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

A pastoral action RPG returns with sharper purpose, trading pure homestead routine for restoration, village craft, and divine repair. It doesn’t lose the old promise: fight by night, farm by morning, and build a life in a world that still needs saving.

Description

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma carries the series eastward into a land scarred by the Celestial Collapse, where ruined villages, vanished gods, and blighted fields turn everyday labour into a quest of recovery. The player becomes an Earth Dancer, either Subaru or Kaguya, and the unchosen protagonist becomes tied to the opposing black dragon, giving the familiar amnesiac opening a sharper dramatic edge. Azuma is arranged around seasonal villages, each with its own deity, customs, residents, and landscape, so the story feels less like a single farmstead expanding outward and more like a country slowly waking up.

The gameplay loop blends action RPG combat, village management, social simulation, farming, crafting, and exploration, with the player cleansing corruption, restoring shrines, recruiting companions, and assigning villagers to jobs such as farming, fishing, mining, and shopkeeping. Sacred Treasures serve both practical and mystical functions, supporting combat and daily life, while skill trees reward a wide spread of activity rather than only battle progress. Customisable village spaces let the player place fields, buildings, and decorations, shifting the series emphasis from maintaining one personal farm to managing a wider community.

Its closest ancestor is Rune Factory 5, but Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is more decisive about restructuring the formula, especially through its larger village systems and stronger regional identity. It also reaches back to Rune Factory 4 in its appetite for relationships, dungeon work, and daily routine, while moving away from the older pattern of farm first, adventure second. Compared with Story of Seasons, its parent tradition, it remains more combat driven and mythic, and compared with Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, its Japanese inspired setting is broader, more social, and less singularly focused on agricultural craft.

On its release reception was generally positive, with critics praising the richer setting, charming cast, expanded village building, and improved sense of direction, while also noting uneven pacing, some shallow management elements, and technical issues on weaker hardware. Overall it is a confident renewal of Rune Factory, albeit not flawless, but a far more focused entry than its immediate predecessor.
