Wii and Wii U AV Cable
The Wii and Wii U AV Composite Cable, originally the default pack-in for the Wii but optional for the Wii U, offered universal compatibility with older TVs but delivered only low-quality 480i video compared to component or HDMI.
Description
When the Wii launched in 2006, Nintendo introduced a new proprietary AV connector that replaced the older multi‑out port used on the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and GameCube. The bundled composite AV cable became the default way to connect the Wii to televisions, chosen for its near‑universal compatibility with CRTs and early flat‑screens. While this ensured accessibility, it limited the console to 480i standard definition unless players upgraded to optional component cables.
By 2012, the Wii U carried forward support for the same AV cable for backward compatibility, but the industry had shifted: HDMI was now the default in‑box connection, enabling crisp 720p and 1080p output. In this way, the composite cable marked the end of Nintendo’s analog era, bridging the gap between the company’s legacy connectors and the modern HDMI standard.
