Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure

A puzzle adventure that combines word-based problem-solving with the heroes, villains, gadgets, and locations of DC Comics. With an enormous character library, it provides a sandbox for solving superhero crises through language.

Description

Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure follows Maxwell and his twin sister Lily after an argument over comic book heroes sends them into the DC Universe. Lily’s damaged globe scatters its Starites across famous locations, leaving the pair dependent on Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the wider Justice League as they attempt to return home. Maxwell’s hostile Doppelganger joins forces with major villains, while Brainiac emerges behind a crisis that moves through Gotham City, Metropolis, Atlantis, Central City, Oa, the Fortress of Solitude, and the Justice League Watchtower.

Players type nouns into Maxwell’s magical notebook to summon objects, creatures, vehicles, and DC characters, then add adjectives to alter their properties and behaviour. Challenges accept multiple solutions, allowing a trapped civilian to be rescued with conventional equipment, improvised machinery, superhuman assistance, or absurd combinations of all three. Reputation Points earned through missions and new summons unlock additional locations and costumes, while optional scenarios retell the origins of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. The Hero Creator combines parts, powers, colours, and behaviours into customised heroes or villains, while the Wii U exclusive Sidekick mode lets a second player use a Wii Remote to control summoned characters and objects.

Following on from Scribblenauts Unlimited, it retains the open vocabulary, adjective system, exploratory stages, and object creation while replacing its original world with the DC universe. The DC material reaches far beyond familiar screen characters, including alternate identities, obscure heroes, variant costumes, vehicles, weapons, and figures drawn from decades of publication history. Initially a PC, Wii U, and 3DS only release, this edition was notable for its touchscreen workflow and cooperative Sidekick mode. It was praised for its remarkable command of DC history, flexible vocabulary, Hero Creator, humour, and imaginative puzzle solutions, but criticised inconsistent object behaviour, disorderly combat, repetitive missions, and a greater emphasis on direct action than earlier Scribblenauts games. The game was ported about five years later to all modern console platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
