Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush

タッチ!カービィ スーパーレインボー

A touch-controlled puzzle platformer that guides Kirby through a handcrafted clay world using rainbow ropes drawn on the GamePad with a striking visual design and gameplay built around momentum, route creation, and environmental problem-solving.

Description

Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush begins when a mysterious portal drains Dream Land of its colour, leaving Kirby and Waddle Dee frozen in place until the fairy Elline restores them with her magical paintbrush. Elline identifies her former friend Claycia as the source of the disturbance, then leads the pair through seven sculpted worlds to recover the stolen colours. The familiar Kirby theme of restoring happiness gains a tactile quality from scenery that resembles modelling clay, with visible fingerprints, soft surfaces, and miniature characters giving the journey the character of an animated playset.

Kirby remains in ball form and cannot walk or jump normally, so the player taps him to roll and draws temporary rainbow ropes on the GamePad touchscreen to redirect his movement, cross gaps, block hazards, and reach collectibles. Looping a rope accelerates him, direct taps trigger spinning attacks, and collecting 100 stars enables a powerful Star Dash that smashes reinforced blocks. Vehicle stages transform Kirby into a tank, submarine, or rocket with altered stylus controls, while hidden treasure chests unlock clay models and music tracks. Up to three additional players control spear-wielding Bandana Waddle Dees with conventional controllers, and Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight amiibo provide temporary abilities.

Its direct predecessor Kirby: Power Paintbrush (Canvas Curse outside PAL territories) on the Nintendo DS first removed Kirby’s conventional movement and placed his path under stylus control. Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush transfers that concept to the larger GamePad, expands it with cooperative play and vehicle transformations, and replaces sprite artwork with a clay-like high-definition presentation. It also follows Kirby’s Epic Yarn in treating material texture as part of the series identity, although its constant reliance on the touchscreen means the player often watches the GamePad rather than the richer image displayed on the main display.

Contemporary reception was mixed, with critics consistently praising the clay presentation, music, charm, and imaginative level concepts while disagreeing over the precision and comfort of its stylus controls. The rope system was creative and the cooperative mode enjoyable, but gameplay suffers from blind spots, unpredictable collisions, awkward boss encounters, and the disconnect between two displays. The game underperformed commercially and remains one of the less widely played Wii U exclusives, but its visual identity has preserved its reputation.
