The second entry in the 3D arcade fighting series Virtual‑On, refining the fast‑paced mecha duels with improved graphics, new Virtuaroid designs, and expanded tactical depth.

Description

Cyber Troopers Virtual‑On Oratorio Tangram (often abbreviated as VOOT) brings Sega AM3’s 1998 Model 3 arcade sequel into the home. The game builds on the foundation of Sega’s original Virtual‑On: Cyber Troopers. While retaining the core gameplay of piloting Virtuaroids in high‑speed 3D duels, the port introduces adjustments tailored to console play.  The game introduces new Virtuaroids alongside returning favourites, each with distinct abilities, weapon loadouts, and movement styles. Combat emphasises speed and precision: players dash, jump, and strafe to outmanoeuvre opponents while managing cooldowns and attack timing. The lock‑on system allows for ranged duels, while close‑range clashes reward aggressive play.

Oratorio Tangram showcases significant improvements over its predecessor. The Model 3 arcade version delivered smoother animation and more detailed environments, while the Dreamcast port preserves much of this fidelity and adds online multiplayer in later revisions. The port is notable for its technical features. It supports the Dreamcast’s VS. Cable (Taisen Cable), allowing two consoles to be linked for head‑to‑head play, a rare option that replicates the arcade’s dual‑cabinet setup. Later Japanese revisions also introduced online multiplayer, enabling competitive matches via Sega’s servers, making it one of the earliest Dreamcast fighting titles to experiment with network play.

Reception was positive among the many fans of the arcade original, with the faithful adaptation. Balance adjustments and new mechanics refine the competitive mecha combat experience. While niche compared to mainstream fighters, VOOT earns a dedicated following and is often cited as the pinnacle of the Virtual‑On series. Its influence can be seen in later arena‑based combat games and in the enduring appeal of competitive mecha duels.
