Great Golf

グレートゴルフ(マスターズゴルフ)

A sports simulation built around measured pacing and strategic shot selection. Presents a stylised course environment as a stage for competitive play.

Description

Great Golf depicts an eighteen‑hole course where players select clubs, adjust stance, and manage wind and terrain in order to complete rounds under stroke play rules. The game presents the sport as a balance between precision and timing, with hazards such as bunkers and water traps reinforcing its emphasis on careful planning. The Japanese release, titled Masters Golf, situates the experience within a more formal sporting frame, while the international version retains the same gameplay structure.

The game employs a three‑dimensional perspective to represent distance and elevation, distinguishing it from earlier isometric golf titles. A power meter governs shot strength, while foot positioning allows hooks and slices to be simulated. Players must select fourteen clubs from a set of seventeen before play, with the putter mandatory, creating a layer of strategic preparation. Up to four participants can take part in turn‑based stroke play, positioning the game as a social experience within the Master System’s limited multiplayer capabilities.

Contemporary reception noted the game’s technical competence but criticised its lack of personality compared with arcade sports contemporaries. Reviewers described it as functional and challenging, yet unremarkable in presentation. Retrospectively it helped expand the Master System’s sports catalogue, situating it alongside titles such as Great Baseball and Great Soccer. It was an effective demonstration of the console’s capacity for simulation more than as a defining sports title.
