Mega Games 6

A solid compilation of early Sega Mega Drive titles across multiple genres a single cartridge: Columns, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Super Hang-On, The Revenge of Shinobi, and World Cup Italia ’90.

Description

Columns was Sega’s answer to the puzzle craze sparked by Tetris, offering a more relaxed, visually ornate experience. Its focus on matching coloured jewels provided a different kind of challenge one more about rhythm and flow than speed.

Golden Axe stood out as a side-scrolling beat-’em-up set in a high-fantasy world, combining simple combat mechanics with memorable co-op gameplay. Its magic system, diverse characters, and unique rideable beasts added depth to what could have been a straightforward arcade brawler.

Streets of Rage became a defining title in the beat-’em-up genre with its gritty urban setting, dynamic soundtrack, and satisfying combat. The game balanced approachable mechanics with enough variety in enemies and stages to remain engaging, especially in two-player mode.

Super Hang-On delivered a fast-paced arcade racer experience with its smooth scaling graphics and sense of speed. The branching career mode in the console version added replayability, while the arcade feel remained central to its appeal.

The Revenge of Shinobi is the third game in the Shinobi series. This action platformer showcases a mix of tight controls, stylish level design, and a standout soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. The Revenge of Shinobi blended traditional ninja themes with a modern twist, becoming one of the more polished early Genesis titles.

World Cup Italia ’90 is not the most technically refined football game but captures the energy of the tournament it was based on. The vertical scrolling and simple controls make it accessible, though its long-term appeal was somewhat limited by repetitive gameplay.
