Pro Action Replay

An enhanced version of the original memory editing cheat and import device for the Sega Mega Drive.

Description

The Pro Action Replay, like its predecessor, is a pass‑through device: the unit plugged into the console’s cartridge slot, and the game cartridge was then inserted into the Action Replay itself. This design allowed the device to intercept and alter memory values in real time, enabling cheats such as infinite lives, invincibility, or level select functions. Physically, the cartridge was a chunky black unit with a side switch. On the Pro model, the switch had three positions: codes on, codes off, and trainer mode. This allowed players to toggle cheats without removing the cartridge.

Unlike the competing Game Genie, which translated memory edits into short alphanumeric codes, the Action Replay line worked directly with raw memory addresses and values in hexadecimal. This gave it a more technical edge, appealing to players who wanted deeper control. The Pro model expanded on the original by allowing up to 20 codes at once(compared to four on the base unit) and introduced a “trainer” mode. This trainer could monitor RAM changes during gameplay, helping users discover new codes themselves rather than relying solely on published lists. Another side effect of its design was that the Pro Action Replay could function as a region converter, bypassing territorial lockouts and allowing Japanese Mega Drive games to run on European or Australian hardware. This feature made it especially popular in PAL territories, where many Japanese titles were never officially released.

The Pro Action Replay was never licensed by Sega, but unlike Nintendo’s aggressive stance against the Game Genie, Sega did not actively block its sale. As a result, it was widely distributed across Europe and Australia through third‑party distributors such as Datel, DMPF Diffusion, Proein, Eurosystems, and Kaylee. It had mainstream recognition in PAL territories, similar to the Game Genie in North America. The Pro Action Replay became a staple accessory for dedicated Mega Drive players in Europe and Australasia, particularly given its superiority in both memory editing and also enabling the use of NTSC titles.
