Description

NBA Showdown ’94 is a basketball simulation developed by EA Creative Development and published by EA Sports initially for the Super NES in late 1993, with the Mega Drive/Genesis version following six months after. It is the fifth and final entry in EA’s “NBA Playoffs” line, which had begun with Lakers versus Celtics in 1989, and was succeeded by the long‑running NBA Live series. For the first time in the franchise, players could select from all 27 NBA teams of the 1993–94 season, not just playoff contenders, marking a significant step toward full‑league authenticity.

Gameplay offered exhibition and playoff modes, with configurable quarter lengths (2, 5, 8, or 12 minutes). It introduced refinements such as the tenths‑of‑a‑second rule in the final minute, and was also one of the first basketball games to feature in‑game third‑party advertising, with Starter and Topps logos appearing in arenas. The title broke from the tradition of naming games after the NBA Finals match‑up (e.g., Bulls vs. Blazers), partly due to licensing complications with star players like Charles Barkley, and instead adopted the more generic “Showdown” branding.

Magazines such as GameFan and Hyper praised its expanded team roster and presentation, while others criticised its controls as stiff compared to contemporaries. It was the last of the “Playoffs” series and the direct precursor to NBA Live 95, which would redefine EA’s basketball line for the next decade.
